Stress Concept - Svabhava

While Dharma is the value system that defines our sense of well being or peace, we transact with our environment through a medium known as the Svabhava (Sanskrit- sva – self/ bhu- grow into).

Svabhava is our inherent ability to manage a response to any stimulus. Generally stimulus cannot be controlled, but our response can be. Our ability to respond to stimulus depends on our capability which is driven by our genes, environment, upbringing, schooling, work & other factors. Svabhava is our operational nature where we judge all incoming information against our dharma before reacting. It is here that stress manifests itself as a reaction to stimulus.

For example: If a dog was to charge at a group of people, each of the group would react differently. Some would freeze in fright, some would adopt an attacking posture, and some would run. These reactions occur because each of us is intrinsically different. This characteristic is known as svabhava.
